Buying screens for digital signage in India: a checklist

What to check before buying signage screens in India: size and viewing distance, brightness near windows, orientation, ports, warranty and software cost.

Buy the screen for the position, not from the price list. Five things decide whether a signage display works in practice: viewing distance, ambient light, orientation, what the panel is warranted for, and whether a compatible player can drive it. Everything else, including the diagonal size everybody searches for, follows from those. This guide gives the checks in the order to make them, and a way to fit the software subscription into the same budget, so a 55-inch quote from a dealer is judged against your wall rather than another quote.

Size: work back from the viewing distance

Do not start from the diagonal. Measure the farthest point from which someone must read the screen, and decide the smallest piece of text that matters at that point: a price, a token number, a room name. Then test that text at the intended size before you buy. The simplest test is a printout of your busiest layout scaled to the candidate screen size, taped to the wall and read from the far position.

The rules of thumb that link diagonal size to distance are a starting point, not a verdict, because they assume a comfortable font and a viewer who is looking. A queue display glanced at from across a hall needs larger text than a menu read at a counter, and the screen size should follow the text rather than the other way round. If the printout fails, the fix is a larger screen, fewer items per screen or a second screen, and paper is the cheap place to learn that.

Brightness: windows and daylight

Indoors and away from windows, most panels are bright enough. The difficult positions are a shop window, a glass frontage, an atrium under a skylight, or anywhere the sun reaches for part of the day. Ask the supplier for the rated brightness of each candidate and whether the panel is specified for a window or high-ambient-light position; a consumer television is not usually rated for either. Then do the test no specification replaces: put a candidate screen in the actual position at the brightest time of day and look at it from the pavement. Ask also about an anti-glare finish; in a window a matt surface can matter as much as extra brightness.

Orientation, ports and the player

Portrait screens suit retail promotions and directories, but not every panel is rated to run on its side; ask the manufacturer before you mount one vertically, because heat and warranty both depend on it. Then match the ports to the player. DigiSign's documented players are the Android and Windows apps and a supported browser, so the screen needs an HDMI input for a box, stick or PC, or a built-in Android system confirmed to run the player.

  • HDMI inputs: at least one free, and check whether the screen returns to that input after a power cut without a remote.
  • USB power: a stick that draws power from the screen's USB port depends on that port staying live; if it switches off with the screen, plan a mains adapter.
  • Built-in Android: some commercial displays include an Android system. Confirm the operating-system version and background-app behaviour on the exact model during the trial rather than trusting the brochure.
  • Network: an Ethernet port on the screen or player is more predictable than shop Wi-Fi, so plan cabling where you can.
  • Remote power: scheduled or network power control is a commercial feature worth having on screens that must switch on before staff arrive.

Mounting, power and network points

A screen is only as good as the wall it hangs on. Check the mounting pattern on the back of the panel against the bracket, the weight against the wall type, and whether the position needs a tilt or a recessed box so the player and cables are hidden and out of the public's reach. Then walk the site with an electrician: each screen needs a power point that is not on a switch someone turns off at night, and a network point or dependable Wi-Fi where the player will sit. Adding a socket after the wall is finished costs far more than the socket.

Warranty and on-site service

Read the warranty for the words commercial use and hours per day. Some consumer warranties exclude commercial use outright; commercial panels are sold with a duty-cycle rating and often with on-site service. Ask three questions of any supplier: whether service is on site or return to base, what the response time is in your city rather than in the metro, and whether spares for the model will still be available in a few years. A screen that fails in a small town under a return-to-base warranty may be dark for weeks while it travels.

How the software cost fits

Keep the screen quote and the software cost as separate lines and add them for the same number of screens. DigiSign is priced per screen, per month, billed monthly, with an introductory rate and a standard rate shown on the pricing page; use the standard rate for anything beyond the first months, and keep AI credits, installation and connectivity as their own lines. The India cost guide walks through that calculation. A screen you already own reduces the one-time column and leaves the recurring column unchanged, so run a trial on an existing TV before a dealer's quote is signed.

What to do next

Print your busiest layout, measure your farthest viewer, and run one existing screen through the 7-day trial before you order. The Setup & players page lists what to verify on the Android, Windows and browser players, and the pricing page shows the per-screen plans, so the recurring line can sit beside the dealer's quote from the start.
